Abstract
ABSTRACT This research aims to reveal the causes of deviations in English pronunciation produced by the freshmen at the Agribusiness Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Andalas. The deviations in producing consonants and vowels were discovered and their causes were revealed extensively. This research used a qualitative method. The researcher conducted the research on 12 male and 8 female first-year students at the Agribusiness Department, Universitas Andalas. The data from this study consisted of 37 sentences in English which the participants pronounced. In analyzing the data, the main theories used in this research were the theories developed by Giegerich (1992), Ellis (1994), and Selinker and Gazz (2008). After analyzing the data, the researcher identified several deviations in the form of English voiced consonants, English voiceless consonants, short vowels, and long vowels. The results of the analysis showed that the phonological rules that were deviated include the change of the short vowels [ɔ]-[t], [æ]-[e], [e]-[a], [a]-[ɪ], [ʌ]-[o], [ɒ]-[u], long vowels [i;]-[e], [ɜː]-[e], [ɜː]-[o], [iː]-[e], [uː]-[u], voiced consonants [dʒ]-[g], [j]-[u], [n]-[d], [d]-[s], and voiceless consonants [ð]-[t], [tʃ]-[c], [θ]-[t], [ʃ]-[s]. The causes of these errors are interlingual and intralingual aspects. Interlingual factors occur when participants' habits (patterns, systems, or rules) prevent the participants from acquiring the patterns and rules of a second language, while intralingual factors occur because the participants do not know the target language well so they have difficulty using it. Keywords: deviation, pronunciation, English consonants, English vowels.
