Abstract
This research aims to discuss the awareness of phonological rules, to discover the causes and effects of the lack of phonological awareness in English conversations on the pronunciation skill from EFL Fourth Year Students at Andalas University, and to explain the reasons why the majority of EFL Fourth Year Students at Andalas University tend to make errors. In gathering the data, the writer applied stratified random sampling. The writer conducted the research towards 9 male students and 11 female students of year 2019 in English Department, Andalas University. In analyzing the data, the writer applied Sonority Hierarchy theory which was developed by Heinz J. Giegerich and Second Language Acquisition theories which were developed by Larry Selinker and Rod Ellis. After analyzing the data, the writer identified 12 vowels and 6 consonants erroneous pronunciation. The causes of these errors are interlingual and intralingual aspects. The result of the analysis shows that most of the students make erroneous pronunciation on fricative consonants /f/, /v/, /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /θ/ and /ð/ and vowels /ɪ/, /ʌ/, /ə/, and /æ/. In Indonesian language, we do not use these pronunciations. Therefore, Indonesians would have struggled and mistaken in pronouncing English using these vowels and consonants.
