Abstract

Abstract This thesis scrutinizes the land use as found in William Faulkner’s novel Go Down, Moses. The purpose of this study is to examine Southerners’ ignorance of land use and to explore Faulkner’s awareness of land use in his novel Go Down, Moses. The main theory used is ecocriticism, especially the “American Pastoral” concept by Garrard to uncover the issue of land use and apply the expressive approach by Abrams to see the author’s perspective of land use in said novel. The method used is qualitative by descriptively presenting the result of the analysis. It involved Go Down, Moses as the primary data and other supporting sources as the secondary data. The result of the analysis presented two forms of ignorance done by the Southerners in utilizing their land. First, illegal logging for development destroys the ecosystem and the existing land. Second, overhunting animals or exploitation leads to extinction in the future and instability of nature. Moreover, based on Faulkner’s perspective of land use, he mentioned three ideologies regarding land use. First, Faulkner believed that the southern land was unfriendly as a result of war, natural disaster, political anarchy, racial brutality, disease, and poverty. Second, Faulkner considered the land that is not owned by humans because of its extreme condition and people have to do violent ways to use the land. Third, Faulkner recognized the destructed nature caused by humans’ deviation towards each other and the loss of humanity.
