Abstract

This research is about the cultural values in animal related proverbs in English and Indonesian. The aims of this research are to compare English and Indonesian animal proverbs in order to show cultural values behind it. The method applied in the research is comparative qualitative. The source of the data in this research are The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs by J. A. Simpson and Jennifer Speake and Kamus Lengkap Peribahasa dan Perumpamaan Indonesia arranged by Panca Aksara Team. Then, the data are compared with its equivalent in English or Indonesian language based on their meaning closeness. From the comparison, cultural values behind the meaning of the proverbs are analyzed. The result of this research shows that there are 11 pairs out of 200 data from both languages using the same animal word and bearing the same meaning, 17 pairs of proverbs use different animal words with the same meaning, and fifty-seven proverbs that its equivalent in other languages based on their meaning are not using animal words. The cultural values in animal proverbs implied by the nature of the animal, its trait, and its environment. The elements stated above represent human cultural values in society.
