Abstract

Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) is one of the most cutting edge reserach for sustainability assessment. There are many methods developed to calculate the LCSA of a product or service whether comparative or integrated. However, much of existing method comes with drawback with the most prominent of them is subjectivity in analysis. This project has designed a model and procedure to determine the LCSA score based on Venn Diagram, one of the most popular presentation model of LCSA. Using Venn Diagram, a statistical method is developed to calculate the proportion of sustainability of a product. A case study will be implemented to apply the procedure to the production of crumb rubber by PT. Batanghari Barisan, Padang. The functional unit studied in this report is the production of one ton of crumb rubber by PT. Batanghari Barisan and the scope of the study in this report is the gate-to-gate approach. The environmental impact considered in this study is Global warming potential, Energy consumption, and Freshwater withdrawal. The economical impact considered in this study is cost of production of 1 ton crumb rubber. The social impact is not considered in this study. The LCSA used in this report is follows the guideline of ISO 14040 by construtcting the goal and scope defenition, life cycle inventory, life cycle impact assessment, and interpretation. Application of the statistical method yielded a sustainability score of 2,809·10-2 for PT. Batanghari Barisan's crumb rubber production, which is heavily influenced by water consumption impact category. Excluding it revealed a lower score of 3,918 · 10-6, highlighting the impact category’s influence to the overall score. This suggests a careful decision on which impact category that will be considered in order to use the statistical based method.
