Abstract

This research deals with errors made by the 2021 English Department students, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Andalas, Padang, in pronuncing English high closed- vowels: [i:], [I], [u:], and [ʊ], which occur in English words. The participants of this research were 20 students who were asked to pronounce 20 selected English words containing a minimal pair sound. The pronunciation of those English words was recorded and then transcribed phonetically by referring to the online Oxford Dictionary. Data analysis shows that, first, most students make mistakes when pronouncing English words containing the /ʊ/ sound. They pronounced full as /fu:l/, could as /ku:ld/, and pull as /pu:l/. Second, referring to Corder’s (1974) types of errors, most of the students’ pronunciation errors belongs to pre-systematic and systematic error. The result of this research implied students’ lack of 1) awareness of similar sounds in English and 2) knowledge of English vowel phonemes.
