Abstract

This thesis analyzes the eco-anxiety experienced by the main character in a novel by Jenny Offill entitled Weather. This research uses qualitative methods by explaining the definition of eco-anxiety and how it is portrayed in the novel through the main character's perspective. The writer also explained the causes of eco-anxiety experienced by the main character and how the main character copes with that feeling. The writer uses psychoanalysis literary theory as the grand theory and eco-anxiety as the sub-theory by applying the perspective of Panu Pihkala. Eco-anxiety is an emotion and mental state arising from environmental conditions and knowledge about them. The result consisted of several points. First, the main character suffers from anxiety, which makes her always alert because she feels the need to prepare for the destruction of nature that will occur at any time. Second, the environmental anxiety experienced by the main character is aggravated by her work with an environmental activist who is also her boss. Third, the main character is a woman with a complex life, so the main character generally experiences anxiety. Fourth, the media is a tool that can cause a person to be increasingly exposed to the causes of their concern. The last one, through the main character's point of view, shows that environmental changes can make people suffer from psychological problems such as anxiety.
