Abstract

This study aims to examine the functions of definite article and its translation procedures found in the noun phrases containing English definite article into Indonesian as found in Animal Farm by George Orwell. This research is a qualitative method that is focusing on text analysis. The data were taken from the English novel Animal Farm and its translation Republik Hewan. First, the writer classifies the functions of the definite article found in the noun phrases containing definite article and its translation by using theories that proposed by Quirk et al (1985) and Kridalaksana (1986). Then the writer analyse how is the definite article translated to the target language by using translations procedure proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (1995). Out of 295 data, the result shows that 75,93% of definite article are omitted in the target language. 21,69% of definite article translated to Indonesian article “para” and 2,38% of definite article translated to Indonesian article “si”. Regarding the translation procedures, there are 91,45% data were translated by using literal translation procedure, 7,49% data were translated by using equivalence translation procedure, 1,06% data were translated by using modulation translation procedure and 0,35% data translated by using adaptation translation procedure.
