Abstract
This study examines personal references in the English novel entitled The Song of Achilles, written by Madeline Miller in 2011 (ST), and its Indonesian translation Nyanyian Achilles, translated by Tanti Lesmana in 2019 (TT), and their techniques of translations. The data were taken from the first fifteen paragraphs from the first (Chapter 1), the middle (Chapter 17), and the last chapter (Chapter 33) from both ST and TT. Qualitative research was employed in this study, involving close reading method to obtain the data. This led to the findings of 336 personal references in the first 15 paragraphs of three chapters in The Song of Achilles (ST). Those personal references are translated into 257 personal references in Nyanyian Achilles (TT). The study then found seven out of eighteen translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). The study found that the English personal references were translated in various ways. While most of the ST personal references were translated literally in the TT, other techniques also occurred. The result suggests there are some attempts made by the translator to maintain a faithful translation while trying to preserve the style and tone of literary text in the target language at the same time. It is shown by how personal references in TT undergo the shift of explicitness/implicitness and sentence restructuring, owing to the translator choice to obtain naturalness and acceptability in target language.
