Abstract

ABSTRACT This thesis examines the meaning of proverbs posted by 2019's English Department students at Universitas Andalas on their personal Instagram accounts. The theory that supports this research is the metaphor theory proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (2003). The concept of metaphor explains how a proverb could exist and how to understand the concept of metaphor and the meaning of the proverb through literal and non-literal meaning. The research presented the data through a screen capture of English Department student 2019's posts on their personal Instagram account. This study aimed to find out the meaning of proverbs posted by English department students at Universitas Andalas on their personal Instagram accounts. The data were collected by observing with screen capture and note-taking technique. Found 28 data from 14 personal Instagram accounts of English Department students 2019 at Universitas Andalas. After the data were collected, proverbs were grouped into their classes, 4 captions belong to pun, connotation in 10 captions, polysemy in 3 captions, paradox in 3 captions, tautology in 1 caption, imagery in 3 captions, hyperbole in 3 captions dan irony in 1 caption.
