Abstract

Women‟s language features are several specific characteristics used by women in their utterances. This research aims to find the types and the function of women‟s language focused on Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth's utterances as women with high social status in Mary Queen of Scots movie. The researcher analyzes the collected data using Robin Lakoff's women‟s language features theory and its function by Janet Holmes's theory. By using the qualitative approach that focused on the features of women‟s language to evaluate patterns and frequency, this study found 120 data with 8 features, they are lexical hedges or fillers and tag questions (0.83%), rising intonation in declaratives (5.83%), empty adjectives (3.33%), intensifiers (16.66%), hypercorrect grammar (20%), super-polite forms (1.66%), and emphatic stress (50.83%). In the analysis, emphatic stress was found as the most frequently used feature that implies that both of the queens in the movie give particular stress to their utterances in addition to strengthening their position in a male-dominated society. Along with that, found that the occurrence of the Hedging device (8.32%), the boosting device (90,82%), and the occurrence of a new function of the women's language is facilitative or Positive Politeness device (0.83%). This new function has the main function of facilitating the interference of the interlocutor in conversation in order to change the topic of discussion.
