Abstract

The preventive and curative effort to overcome the degenerative diseases including diabetes melitus are being intensified including the use of substitute sugar or low-calorie sugar instead of real sugar. However, it is unknown whether such substitute sugar could exert the unexpected effects in diabetic patients. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of several substitute sugar products sold in the market (namely ECS and TDS) on blood glucose levels, blood cholesterol levels and body weight in diabetes melitus mice induced by alloxan. This study had been performed for four months from September 2018 to January 2019 using an experimental method with Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments which were P0 (health animals without any treatments as negative control), P1 (diabetes animals as positive control), P2 (diabetes animals treated with ECS solution) and P3 (diabetes animals treated with TDS solution) with six replications, respectively. The treatments were deployed for six weeks by providing the substitute sugar via water bottle ad libitum. Furthermore, the blood sugar, blood cholesterol, body and organ weights were measured. The results demonstrated that the TDS as a substitute sugar could prevent the increase of routine blood glucose and fasting blood glucose, while ECS only prevented the increase of fasting blood glucose. However, the substitute sugar did not affect blood cholesterol levels but reduced body weight and affect organ weight. It can be concluded that the composition's differences of substitute sugar have different effects on diabetic mice. Hence, the patients are suggested to carefully check the composition for the maximum benefits and less negative effect of consuming substitute sugars. Keyword : Degenerative disease, Fasting blood glucose, Low-calorie sugar, Organ weight, Routine blood glucose
