Abstract

SURVIVAL RATE COMPARISON OF BREAST CONSERVING SURGERY VERSUS MASTECTOMY FOR EARLY-STAGE BREAST CANCER IN PADANG CITY PERIODE 2005-2018 M. Al Farisyi,1 Wirsma A. Harahap,2 Daan Khambri,2 Ricvan D. Nindrea3 Background and aims: Breast Conserving Surgery (BCS), with or without radiotherapy, and mastectomy are kind of operative therapies as a standard to treat the early stage breast cancer. The aim of the study is to compare the treatment outcomes between the use of BCS and mastectomy for the early stage breast cancer therapy. Methods: This cohort retrospective study reviewed the early stage breast cancer patients in Padang city, who received treatment at Dr.M.Djamil hospital, Ropanasuri hospital, Ibnu Sina hospital, Siti Rahmah hospital and Yos Sudarso hospital between 2005-2018. The endpoints of this study were disease free survival (DFS), overall survival (OS) and recurrence (local and distant metastasis). Results: Of 237 eligible patients, 201 underwent mastectomy and 36 underwent BCS with or without radiotherapy. There were no differences between BCS and mastectomy group in DFS (75% vs. 84,6%), OS (88,9% vs. 92,5%), local recurrence (11,1% vs. 6,5%) and distant metastasis (13,9% vs. 9%). DFS in BCS and mastectomy group were 76 months and 69 months. OS were 102 months vs. 111 months. Conclusion: BCS and mastectomy showed similar survival rate as the operative therapies for early stage breast cancer in Padang city. There was no significant difference in terms of DFS, OS, local recurrence and distant metastasis. Keywords: Early stage breast cancer, breast conserving surgery, breast conserving therapy, mastectomy, disease free survival, overall survival. 1Resident of Surgery Departement, Medical Faculty of Andalas University. 2Oncology Division of Surgery Departement, Dr. M.
