Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to describe what kind of women’s empowerment that W2D movement underwent to raise public awareness about the women driving issue. A women movement was established to challenge the social norm that prohibited women from driving. As a string of Arab Spring uprisings, Saudi women were inspired by the scenes of Arab Muslim women rallying for political and social change and utilising social media to address the issue of women driving. This movement, then known as Women2Drive movement, launched a serial act of protest which were organised well through social media. This research uses qualitative research method with descriptive-analysis approach. In order to describe what kind of women’s empowerment that’s done by the movement, this research classifies empowerment based on various aspects and uses the concept of social media activism. The results of this study conclude that women’s empowerment that was carried out by W2D movement focused on social and psychological dimension. This self-empowerment was occurred utilising social media where most activities are carried out and organised.
