Abstract
One obstacle to using taro tubers is the content of antinutrients in the form of oxalate (calcium oxalate). Oxalate is a compound that can cause itching in the mouth, burning sensation, irritation of the skin, mouth and digestive tract when consumed in large quantities. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of cobalt-60 (60Co) gamma ray irradiation which can reduce calcium oxalate and expand the genetic diversity of white taro cultivars (Xanthosoma sagittifolium). This research was conducted in June-October 2018 at the Isotope and Radiation Application Center, National Atomic Agency (BATAN) Jakarta, Agricultural Product Technology Laboratory and Experimental Garden, Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University, Padang. The experimental method of cobalt-60 gamma ray irradiation with doses of gray 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 gray, observations with Single Plant using the Student test t test at the level of 5%. The results of the study showed that the reduction of calcium oxalate content in leaves (lamina) between ± 0.5862-0.8860 mg / 100 g. Reduction of calcium oxalate is lower when gray is increased. This reduction of calcium oxalate occurred in all gray matter, 120 gray showed the lowest reduction of ± 0.5862. Effective irradiation dose orientation occurs in 90 gray with Ld 50 (Lethal dose 50). Plant height, number of leaves leaf and color variations occurred showed a narrow diversity. Keywords: Taro plants, growth, calcium oxalate, mutations
