Abstract
Smartphones are important communication device that are widely used in the world. Smartphones are used everyday in almost all places including in the hospital environment. The hospital environment contains many pathogenic microorganisms that can be transmitted through smartphones, one of them is Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a serious health problem that causes high mortality and morbidity. This study aims to identify the MRSA on nurse’s smartphone in Internal Medicine Department of RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang. This study type is descriptive and using total sampling technique carried out on 71 samples from smartphone of nurses in Internal Medicine Department RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang. The sample was taken by swabbing sterile cotton sticks on the screen and back of the smartphone. The samples then analysed by standard microbiology technique and antibiotic sensitivity testing with cefoxitin disc. The results of this study indicate the presence of microorganism contamination on all smartphones examined. There are 28 smartphones contaminated with MRSA (39.4%) and the rest contaminated with non-MRSA (60.6%). Most smartphones that are contaminated with MRSA are found in the Woman inpatient room (IW). The conclusion of this study is there is contamination of microorganism on all nurse’s smartphone in Internal Medicine Department of RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang with MRSA and non-MRSA.
