Abstract

Spanish pepper (Piper aduncum L.) fruits contain a fungicide which can be used to control plant pathogens. This research was conducted at the Laboratory of Phytopathology, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Andalas from November 2017 to January 2018 to examine the effectiveness of Spanish pepper fruit extract at various concentrations against growth of Colletotrichum capsici in vivo. The method used in this study was a completely randomized design with 5 treatments and 5 replications. The treatments consisted of (A) control (0% extract), (B) 5% extract, (C) 7.5% extract (D) 10% extract and (E) the fungiside Mankozeb (0.5%). Parameters observed were incubation period, percentage of chillies infected and effect on the size of the infection. The results showed that the Spanish pepper fruit boiled water extract at a concentration of 10% could inhibit the growth of C. capsici on chilli in vivo. The incubation period was on average 5 days, the size of lesions was suppressed by 71.98% but all chillies were infected. key: anthracnose, chili, Colletotrichum capsici, Spanish pepper
