Abstract
Jambu air or water guava is traditional medicine that has potensial to be developed as phytopharmaka. Usually Jambu air is used to treat diarrhea, fever, improve digestion, reduce cholesterol, diabetes, and prevent deadly diseases such as cancer because it contains various kinds of secondary metabolites such as phenolic, saponin, triterpenoid, and alkaloid. The purpose of the research is to determine the antioxidant activity, total phenolic, and toxicity of the extract from jambu air stem bark.The activity of antioxidants was determined by DPPH method (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrihydrazyl), total phenolic by using Folin-Ciocalteu method, and toxicity by BSLT method. The results showed that methanol and ethyl acetate extract had very strong antioxidant activity with IC50 are : 17,145 and 31,530 mg/L, while the hexane extract is not antioxidant with IC50 is 746,274 mg/L. The total phenolics of methanol extract, ethyl acetate, and hexane are: 3,349; 2,632; and 1,682 mg GAE/ 10 mg of dried extract. Toxicities of methanol extract, ethyl acetate, and hexane have moderate toxicity with LC50 are 132,340; 195,170; and 362.270 mg/L. The relationship between total phenolics to antioxidant activity is the greater the total phenolic content, the antioxidant activity are stronger. The relationship can be expressed by the regression equation y = -454,0x + 1424,2 (R2= 0.829). Keywords:Syzigium aqueum, antioxidant, total phenolic, and toxicity
