Abstract
Cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmannii) extract contains polyphenols consists of flavonoids, procyanidin, and phenol component. Cinnamate inhibits the activity of HMG Co-A reductase enzyme thus lowering high cholesterol levels. In addition, polyphenol components that act as antioxidants can reduce the process of oxidative stress by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the liver that plays an important role in lowering cholesterol levels. The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of cinnamon extract in total cholesterol level of hypercholesterolemia rats. This study was a true experimental with pre-post test randomized control group design consisted of 4 groups (K-,K+,P1, and P2). Group P1 was given cinnamon extract with dose of 500mg/kg/day and group P2 with dose of 750mg/kg/day started from the 16th day to the end of the study. Total cholesterol level was measured by CHOD-PAP method. Data were analyzed by Wilcoxon test. Total cholesterol level in group K- increased from 65,98 mg/dl to 68,02 mg/dl, group K+ increased from 76,26 mg/dl to 82,58 mg/dl, group P1 decreased from 75,24 mg/dl to 66,58 mg/dl, and group P2 decreased from 75,04 mg/dl to 62,32 mg/dl. Based on Wilcoxon test analysis showed a significant decrease in total cholesterol level in group P2. The conclusion of this study showed that cinnamon extract can reduce total cholesterol level of hypercholesterolemia rats. Key word : hypercholesterolemia, cinnamon extract, total cholesterol
