Abstract

Usnic acid is a secondary metabolite compound of Usnea sp. which has antiinflammatory and antibacterial activity that can be utilized as burn healing. Usnic acid has low solubility in water so the use of solid dispersion systems could give a significant contribution to the improvement of its solubility in water. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of concentration difference from solid dispersion of usnic acid-PVPK30 in membrane for burns healing effectiveness on rabbits. Solid dispersion of usnic acid-PVP K30 was prepared by freeze drying method and was formulated into membranes with various concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 2% by phase version method. The prepared membrane was evaluated for its physical and mechanical properties such as, appearance, thickness, tensile strength, percent of elongation, young's modulus, water absorption. The evaluated membrane was tested of superficial burns on four male white rabbits divided into six treatment group. Data of burn healing percentage was analyzed statistically using two-way ANOVA followed by post hoct Duncan test at 95% confidence level. The membrane with 2% of solid dispersion of usnic acid-PVPK30 showed a better result in burn healing compared to 1% and 0.5%. Higher solid dispersion usnic acid-PVP K30 concentration in membrane significantly increased percentage of burn healing (p<0.05). The membrane with 2% of solid dispersion usnic acid-PVPK30 is the most effective to all group.
