Abstract

Acute myeloblastic leukemia is potentially treated by chemotherapy. The cancer is progressing by aging that makes therapy for elderly become the focus. Therapy for elderly patients given depends on condition of each patient, comorbidity and organ function. Chemotherapy is usually given in induction phase such as classical therapy or “7+3”. Response assessment is important in induction phase to see the therapy optimality. This research aims to know the chemotherapy response in elderly patients having AML in Dr. M. Djamil Padang General Hospital. This descriptive retrospective study was conducted in January 2018 – March 2018. Sample size was 12 patients suited by inclusion criteria. Data was collected by evaluating medical records. The study showed that most AML patients were men (75 %) with average age of 65 and AML de novo type (83 %) with average blast amount in bone marrow was 41 %. Blood test before chemotherapy revealed that patients having anemia for 58.3 %, leukocytosis for 58.3 %, severe thrombocytopenia for 58.3 % and blast amount of 44 % while blood test after chemotherapy revealed that patients having mild anemia of 42.7 %, leucopenia of 43.7 % and moderate-severe thrombocytopenia of 50 % with average blast amount of 23.9 %. Chemotherapy response of AML elderly patients were showing complete remission on 16.671 % and unresponsive on 50 %. Keywords : AML, chemotherapy, elderly, complete remission, unresponsive
