Abstract

ABSTRACT Lightning is a natural phenomenon that often in the earth, and very interesting to study. When it is classified, the are several types of lightning, one of them is negative natural lightning cloud to ground (-CG), lightning is mostly happened than the type of positive natural lightning. Lightning phenomena examined in this study focused on the analysis of the stepped leader characteristics of the negative cloud to ground with short intervals of preliminary breakdown and return stroke (intervals <6 ms) in Padang, West Sumatera, Indonesia. The amount of stroke data observed are 25 stroke which has pulse leader that occured in November 2014 through the month of February 2015. The data used by recording phenomenon of lightning electric field antenna (fast antenna). The calculation and analysis performed on the stepped leader characteristics, measurament and calculation of the maximum current negative lightning recorded by osciloscope, and for the value of the arithmetic mean of the observed characteristics leader amounted to 37 pieces ; interpulse duration in worth 25.6 µs ; individual pulse duration worth 4.48 µs ; comparison of the peak pulse field with field leader return stroke peak value of 6.75% ; the maximum current value on the negative lightning worth 155.7 kA. Result comparing observations of previous studies indicateds that the negative lightning interval preliminary breakdown short (<6 ms)have an interval leader until the return stroke is short, the number of leader fewer, interpulse duration denser, individual pulse duration who is not great, field comparison peak pulse peak field leader with the return stroke below 10% and have maximum current is greater than the ligthning that have a long preliminary breakdown interval of time (>6 ms) Keywords : Ligthning Negative, Preliminary Breakdown, Stepped Leader, First return Stroke, the maximum current
