Abstract

Tourism is one of the concepts considered to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by realizing green tourism. Tourists in Bukittinggi municipality always increase every year, but this has not been balanced by environmental policy by tourism sector. The impact of environmental degradation due to tourism can occur if not accommodated by the policy that regulates tourism activities. Tourists in Bukittinggi municipality always increase every year, but this has not been supported by environmental policy. The purpose of this study is to analyze the environmental problems due to tourism activities, evaluate the policies of the tourism sector that can affect the environment and the formulation of tourism development for more environmentally friendly in the future. The method used in this study is a qualitative approach by interviewing 9 informants from the Department of Tourism, Youth and Sports, Departement of Environment, and managers of hotels and restaurants; observation on 6 tourist objects during tourism season and literature study. The results showed most of the tourism activities concentrated in Guguak Panjang District causing problems of traffic jam and not enough parking space. Many tourists still not behaving well towards flora and fauna. Other problems found are the increasing amount of waste in the tourist season, the high use of water, electricity, and accidents during the tourist season (specifically electricity at the end of the year). In addition, the increase in HIV positive cases and CO2 emissions is in line with the increasing number of tourists from year to year. Green tourism policy on tourism has not existed but there are some activities that have led to the pro-environment tourism activities. It is advisable to stakeholders of tourism-related policies to engage communities for tourism activities as a source of livelihood by prioritizing environmental sustainability, directing the hospitality sector to lead to ecolabel certification, establishing resource efficiency ranging from water, electricity and transportation, and regulating city conditions especially in tourism season to avoid chaotic, especially in terms of transportation and potential accidents.
