Abstract

Background: Obesity is a global health problem which often associated with elevated uric acid level. Adipocytes hypertrophy and inflammation in obesity promoted insulin resistance. Insulin resistance and proinflammation cytokines had an important role in increased of cell apoptotic and tissue necrosis which caused elevated uric acid level. This study to investigate the correlation of uric acid level with insulin resistance in obesity. Method: This was an analytical study with cross sectional design towards 66 obese people at medical check-up department from Maret until November 2015. The obese people was determined according BMI>25. Laboratory measurements was performed fasting glucose, fasting insulin and uric acid. Insulin resistance was determined with HOMA-IR index>2.5. Data were analyzed by Pearson correlation test and p<0.05 were considered significant. Results: The mean of fasting glucose was 95.9 (11.4) mg/dL, mean of fasting insulin was 12.9 (6.1) μIU/mL and mean of HOMA-IR index was 3.1 (1.6). There were 39 (59.1%) subjects who were insulin resistance. The mean of uric acid was 5.7 (1.4) mg/dL. Elevated uric acid level were found in 8 (12.1%) males and 8 (12,1%) females. Subject with insulin resistance were found in 7 (10.6%) males and 8 (12.1%) females. Correlation analysis between uric acid level and HOMA-IR index in obesity was r=0.22; p= 0.075. Correlation analysis between uric acid level and HOMA-IR index in obese males was r=0,279; p=0,151 and in obese females was r=0,420; p=0,009. Conclusion: There is weak correlation between uric acid level and HOMA-IR index and statistically not significant. There is weak correlation between uric acid level and HOMA-IR index in obese males and statistically not significant. There is moderate correlation between uric acid level and HOMA-IR index in obese females and statistically significant. Key words: uric acid, hyperuricemia, HOMA-IR index, insulin resistance, obesity.
