Abstract

Background : In acute ischemic stroke, low level of serum albumin may worsen the functional status, which may affect the length of stay. We proposed to conduct the study to assess the association between serum albumin level and length of stay in acute ischemic stroke patients. Methods : This study uses cross-sectional study design . Study subjects are patients with acute ischemic stroke who were treated in neurological Ward of DR. M. Djamil Padang Hospital from March to September 2015, within 24 hours of onset according to inclusion criteria. Serum albumin level measured on the second day of treatment. Serum albumin, length of stay, stroke severity, complications and risk factors used in the analysis. The correlation between serum albumin level and length of stay were tested with Chi Square test for multivariate analysis. The results were considered as statistically significant if the p value < 0,05 Results : Among 50 patients evaluated during the study period, mean age was 59 years and mean of albumin levels was 3.86, from a multivariate analysis there was no correlation between serum albumin levels with the length of stay (p = 0.72), there was a correlation between the stroke severity with the length of stay (p <0.001, OR = 12.6), there was a correlation between complications with the length of stay (p <0.001, OR = 17.6), there was no correlation with risk factors and the length of stay (p = 0.76) Conclusion : There was no corelation between serum albumin levels with a longer treatment, but there is a significant correlation between stroke severity and complications with the length of stay.
