Abstract

EROSION PREDICTION AT SEVERAL UNITS OF LAND IN KAMANG MUDIAK, KAMANG MAGEK DISTRICT, AGAM REGENCY ABSTRACT Erosion causes soil degradation and destroys soil function as a medium for plant growth. This study was aimed to determine amount of soil erosion at several units of land, rate of soil erosion that can be tolerated, to map the erosion rate and to determine the appropriate conservation alternatives that could be applied in Kanagarian Kamang Mudiak, District Kamang Magek Agam Regency. This research was conducted by survey method which had some stages: (1) Preparation, (2) Preliminary survey, (3) Main survey, (4) Soil analysis in laboratory, and (5) Data processing. Soil parameters analyzed were soil texture, org-C, and permeability. Amount of soil erosion prediction was processed by using USLE formula. If the value of A (erosion amount) was greater than the value of T (erosion that could be tolerated), it was necessary to note the factor C (plant factor) and the P (soil conservation techniques used) on the land use. The results showed that the erosion occured in the II Ht land unit (forest unit with gradual slope) was classified into low grade erosion index, III Ht (forest unit with a rather steep slope) and IV Ht (forest unit with steep slope) were classified into moderate grade of erosion hazard index. Land unit II KC (mixed garden with gradual slope) belonged to the high index of erosion hazard and then land unit III KC (mixed garden with a rather steep slope) and land unit III SB (shrubs with a rather steep slope) belonged to highly dangerous erosion index. Several units of land in Kenagarian Kamang Mudiak having tolerable rate of erosion were II Ht (16.22 tons/ha/ y), II KC (19.12 ton/ha/y), III Ht (20.02 ton/ ha/y), III KC (20.93 ton/ha/y), III SB (16.91 ton/ha/y), and IV Ht (17,60 ton/ha/y). Suggestion for the land units (land II Ht, III Ht, III SB and IV Ht) were that the land units should be used as natural forest with much litter, whereas for land units II KC and III KC was recommended to maintain mixed garden having high plant density and conservation of soil by planting strip grass with good design.
