Abstract

The rapid changes of technology has caused every sector in a company has to used a variety of technology for the effectiveness of the performance and to achieve the company’s goals. However the role of human resource can not be replaced by technology that exist today. Human resource has a major roles in every activity of the company. Even if the company has supported by funding infrastructure and excessive, but without the support of qualified human resources activities, the company will not be resolved properly. The human resources will determine the success of the company’s activities. All organizations consist of leader and followers, leader is a person who is appointed, elected or informally chosen to direct and coordinate the work of other in a group (Fiedler, Chemers et al. 1976). The leader is a person that have characteristics that will influence other person ability to create a successful leadership outcome (Clawson 2002). A leader behavior have to affect the subordinate, and also it determines the direction of its organizational goals. A leader must be able to influence subordinate to work beyond expectations and organizational goals. A leader has to consider the specific circumstance in choosing leadership style in leading the followers. Leaders can not adopt just one leadership style that he or she 10 think it is the best way, he or she must consider the condition and situation especially the followers. A leader should know and understands what kind of leadership style that the follower wish. They should consider it in implementing the leadership style to achieve an effective leadership that can avoid conflict within the organization and can reach the organizational goals. Leadership is a bond which makes people to work together. Organization are more concerned about understanding, development and improvement of their leadership. This can be achieved by improving performance through an effective type of leadership, it is a transformational leadership. Bass (1998) stated that the impact of effective leadership style of transformational leadership has been conducted over the last decades. Organization are made to achieve the goals. To achieve their goals effectively and efficiently, capable and motivated human resource is necessary. Prosperity of any organization depends upon employee willingness to perform extraordinary and their loyalty to the organization. Hardworking and involved employees are more productive ones (Brown and Leigh 1996) and in this highly competitive world competence of human resource determine sustainable competitive advantage for any organization (Barney and Wright 1997). The willingness of employees to go beyond the formal specifications of job roles, termed extra-role behaviors is important, but among these behaviors, organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) is the most widely studied form (Organ 1988) .OCB has 11 been defined as individual behavior that is discretionary, not directly or explicitly recognized by the formal reward system and that in aggregate promotes the effective functioning of the organization. Being helpful and supportive of colleagues in a way that benefits the organization, working towards the organization’s goals – this is embodied in the definition of citizenship behavior. Organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) has garnered much academic attention since its conception. It is perceived to be something intangible; OCB is not always formally recognized or rewarded, and concepts like ‘helpfulness’ or ‘friendliness’ are also difficult to quantify. Management should also be educated about OCB, and consider having OCB included in performance evaluations in order to actively encourage it among employees. Based on the previous research by Kark and Waismel-Manor (2005) said that the doing of OCB is different for female and male employee. It is depend on how they treat the OCBs on their job and also it is happen because the different role and function that female and male has in the organization. Because of that the effect of gender perspective on influence the doing of OCBs is also important to analyze. In order to know about the influence of transformational leadership on organizational citizenship behaviour in giving an effect to enhance employee performance and find out the effect of gender point of view in doing OCBs of employees in RSUP. Dr. M. Djamil Padang based on the illustration above, the author feel interest to write this study with the title is “The Influence of 12 Transformational Leadership on Employee Performance : The Mediating Role of Organizational Citizenship Behavior”.
