Abstract

Experiment on the Influence of drying time and storage on viability and vigor of Nutmeg seed (Myristica fragrans Houtt) has been carried out in the Laboratory of Seed Science and Technology Faculty of Agriculture, University of Andalas Padang. This experiment was carried out from February to April 2015. The purpose of this experiment was to find out the best interaction between duration of drying and storage on viability and vigor of nutmeg, knowing the effect of drying time on viability and vigor of nutmeg, and to know the effect of storage time on viability and vigor of nutmeg seed. The method used was experimental with two-factors which is based on completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. The first factor is drying time consists of three levels without drying, drying the seeds for 24 hours, and drying the seeds for 2x24 hours, the second factor is the length of storage that consists of five levels, without storage, one week, two weeks, three weeks and four weeks. Results showed there was an interaction between the drying time and length of storage of the nutmeg seed on moisture content. Viability and vigor of nutmeg seed remain high without being dried, but after being dried, the viability and vigor of nutmeg seed decreased. Viability and vigor of nutmeg seed remain high without stored, but after storage the viability and vigor decreased. Based on the results of this trial can be concluded that nutmeg seeds are recalcitrant and they are not tolerant to drying and can not be stored for longer time.
