Abstract
ABSTRACT Balanophora elongata is one of parasitic plants from genus Balanophoraceae that grows in West Sumatra forest, this plants collected in Bancah, Balingka, West Sumatra. Antibacterial screening of methanolic extract of rhizome and flowers of parasitic plants Balanophora elongata showed strong inhibition toward the growth of 12 human pathogenic testing bacteria, and methanolic extract of flower gave more significant activity, and was selected for isolation work of major compounds. The flower were macerated with methanol, then fractionated in turn with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and n-butanol. n-butanolic fraction was chromatographed on silica gel and eluted with ethyl acetate, and continued with DCM-methanol (9:1). Fractions having similar TLC pattern were combined, evaporated and recrytallized to yield GF_BE_02 and GF_BE_03. Based on its spectroscopic data, compound GF_BE_02 was identified as coniferin and compound GF_BE_03 could not be identified since its the spectroscopic data have not arrived. Antimicrobial assay of fractions and isolate was carried out by using agar disc diffusion method. All fractions gave strong inhibition toward all of testing bacteria. Coniferin was active against S. aureus. Isolate GF_BE_03 was active toward S. epidermidis, S. mutans, and E. coli. Methyl caffeic acid obtained from previous work (Faroliu, et al., 2016) was found active toward S. mutans, and E. coli. Keyword : Parasitic plants, Balanophora elongata, Antibacterial Activity, coniferin, methyl caffeic acid.
