Abstract
This research discusses about the use of implicature at American court of law as seen in Caught in Providence TV shows. The aims of this research is to find out the types and functions of implicature at American court of law as seen in Caught in Providence TV Shows. The data in this research were obtained from transcription of 20 cases which were firstly transcribed by students in CA class and finally completed by Adira Wardani in her research. Then, the data were analyzed and categorized to find out the implicature contained in the conversation in Caught in Providence TV shows. The data were analyzed by using Grice’s theory (1975) for the types of conversational implicature. After that, the functions of implicature were analyzed by using the theory from Shuy (1993). The result of data is presented descriptively. Based on this research, there are 47 implicatures that is used by participants in Caught in Providence TV show. The dominant type of conversational implicature used in this research is generalized conversational implicature. Then, the most used function of implicature is denying.
