Abstract

Smoking has become a habit in Indonesian people, include the college students. Most of the students who are experiencing stress will choose to smoke with reason to relieve their stress and will feel relax after consume a cigarette because there was nicotin will stimulate the dopamin. Whereas smoking is a harm behaviour because can causes lung and heart diseases, cancer, also brain damage. The study aimed to find the association between stress level in writing a final paper and the degrees of smoking of college students of Engineering Faculty Andalas University. The study was a corelational with cross-sectional design and has been conducted from October until November 2016. Population of the study were 116 male students class of 2012 Engineering Faculty Andalas University who smoke and writing a final paper. The sample of the study is equal with the population. The data were gathered by distributing questionnaires and use perceived stress scale-10 to assess the level of stress and Brinkman index to assess the degrees of smoking. Data was analyzed using Chi-Square technique. The results of the study is most of respondents experience moderate stress (85,3%), and most of them experience mild degree of smoking (90,5%). The statistic bivariat analysis p value = 0,279 showed that was no significant correlation between stress level and degree of smoking. This is due to many other factors that cause a students to smoke. Keywords: Students, stress level, degree of smoking
