Abstract

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) often occur in coastal marine areas. The spatial distribution of phytoplankton can indicate the area of occurrence HABs. This study aims to determine the spatial distribution based on the composition and structure of the phytoplankton causing Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in the coastal waters of Padang City, West Sumatra. This study used a purposive random sampling method with 6 sampling locations (the estuary of Pisang River, the estuary of Batang Arau River, the estuary of Banda Bakali River, the estuary of Batang Kuranji River, the estuary of Batang Air Dingin River, and the estuary of Batang Kandis River). Based on the research, 338 species, 12 classes, 85 families of phytoplankton were found with a high diversity index (H'= 3.026), evenly distributed species (E = 0.520), and no dominant species (C = 0.156). From all study locations, 25 species of phytoplankton have the potential to cause Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) which belong to 4 classes (Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae, and Dinophyceae) and are group of toxin producers and red tide makers. The phytoplankton species potentially causing HABs with the highest density and found at each study locations were Blixaea quinquecornis and Trichodesmium erythraeum. Thus, coastal waters in Padang City have the potential for the occurrence of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) phenomena
