Abstract
Diarrhea and dysentery are still public health problems in many developing countries, including Indonesia. Escherichia coli and Shigella dysenteriae are the main pathogenic bacteria that cause diarrhea and dysentery. Traditional medicine is still widely used by the community because it is considered to have fewer side effects than synthetic drugs. Coconut root has been trusted by some people in Indonesia as a traditional medicine to treat diarrhea and dysentery, but this has not been supported by scientific research. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of coconut root extract (Cocos nucifera Linn) in inhibiting the growth of E.coli and S.dysenteriae bacteria. This study used a post-test-only design with a control group. Coconut roots were extracted by maceration method using 96% ethanol solvent then evaporated. A bacterial sensitivity test was conducted using the Kirby-Bauer method with test concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. Determination of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration was done by dilution method. Based on statistical analysis of E. coli the largest inhibition zones were 75% and 100%. In S. dysenteriae the largest inhibition zones were 50%, 75%, and 100%. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of coconut root extract on E.coli 6.25% and on S.dysenteriae 3.125%. The Minimum Bactericidal Concentration of coconut root extract on E.coli and S. dysenteriae is 50% respectively.
