Abstract

ABSTRACT This research discusses a stylistic analysis of foregrounding found in the articles published by National Geographic magazine. It aims to analyze the types and functions of foregrounding. The data in this research were collected by reading and analyzing the articles. The datum is analyzed by taking notes of the sentences of foregrounding and then translating all of them. Data is analyzed by using the theory of foregrounding by Leech (2008), the theory of types of foregrounding by Douthwaite (2014), and the theory of functions of foregrounding by Fowler (1996). These theories are used to analyze, classify, and describe the types and functions of foregrounding found in articles published by National Geographic magazine. Based on this research, there are 35 foregrounding found in the articles in National Geographic magazine. The result of this research shows that the most dominant type of foregrounding found is devices of deviation. There is 20 external deviation in this research, while the most dominant function of foregrounding found is elements of hyperbole.
