Abstract

One form of juvenile delinquency that often occurs is mass brawl. The mass brawl occurs because teenagers' social-emotional competence is low, so they are easily influenced and provoked by other parties. Therefore, the role of parents is needed in the social-emotional competence of children. The study aims to determine the relationship between parental bonding and social-emotional competence in adolescents involved mass brawl. The research used a quantitative method in the form of correlation using Spearman Rank analysis techniques. 38 adolescents involved mass brawl who aged 16 to 20 have participated in this research, the sample was obtained by snowball sampling technique. The instrument used to collect data was the adaptation of the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) which has two dimensions: Parental Care (α = .897) and Overprotection (α = .829) and the Delaware Social Emotional Competency Scale (DSECS-S) (α = .752). The results of this study indicate that there is a significant positive relationship between Parental Care and Social-Emotional Competence (r = .494; p <.05) and a significant negative relationship between Overprotection and Social-Emotional Competence (r = -.620; p < .05) in adolescents involved mass brawl populations. Therefore, it is recommended that parents be warm and caring to their children, but not overprotect and control them excessively in order to reduce the probability of their children being involved in mass brawl.
