Abstract

The thesis analyzes a postmodernist novel, the Cat’s Cradle, by Kurt Vonnegut. This study aims to reveal Vonnegut’s humanistic messages through the depiction of irony and pessimism as side effects of grand narratives in the novel. This thesis focuses on two grand narratives: science progress and religious teachings. It is analyzed using a concept of grand narrative proposed by Jean F. Lyotard, which is part of postmodern theory. This study also uses Friedrich Nietzsche’s theory regarding how pessimism creates strength. The analysis results show that the grand narratives, which cause totalitarianism, lead humans to brutal annihilation. Nevertheless, it is hoped that the reader will consider irony and pessimism as a part of life and that the disillusionment of grand narratives is necessary for being more mature.
