Abstract

Fossil fuel usage must be decreased and replaced with renewable sources to eliminate global warming. This research aims to evaluate the emission of PM2.5, CO, and CO2 from corn straw briquette combustion. Corn straw was converted to charcoal through the pyrolysis method at a temperature of 75-150°C for 4 hours, then it was mixed with starch as much as 10% of charcoal and shaped using a manual compression tool. The quality tests of corn straw briquette consist of proximate analysis, heat value, and density. Based on SNI 01-6235-2000, only water content met the regulation because it was lower than 8% (3.293%) and had a density of as much as 0.487. The concentration of PM2.5, CO, and CO2, recorded through the Water Boiling Test (WBT) in three phases (cold start, hot start, and simmering), have met the Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia No. 1077, 2011. The concentrations of PM2.5 for each phase were 5.231 µg/m3, 7.282 µg/m3, and 5.811 µg/m3, respectively. The concentration of CO for each phase was 0.755 ppm, 1.265 ppm, and 1.306 ppm, respectively. The concentrations of CO2 for each phase were 375.978 ppm, 416.241 ppm, and 419.472 ppm, respectively. CO/CO2 ratio for each phase was 0.0020, 0.0030, and 0.0031, respectively. Rate consumptions for each phase were 0.118 g/g, 0.108 g/g, and 0.327 g/g, respectively. The result of this research shows corn straw briquette is recommended as a renewable source, but its quality needs to be improved. Keywords: biomass stove, briquette, carbon dioxide, corn straw, global warming.
