Abstract
ABSTRACT Seasonal vegetables are plants less than one-year-old and consumed as vitamins and minerals. Increasing the production of seasonal vegetable crops in Pesisir Selatan Regency increases the amount of waste produced. Based on existing conditions, garbage on agricultural land is usually burned, thrown into the river, and left to rot on the edge of the land. The waste needs to be managed so as not to cause pollution to the environment. This study aimed to identify production, density, composition, biodegradability, and recycling potential and provide recommendations regarding seasonal vegetable waste management in Pesisir Selatan Regency. Sampling used a purposive sampling method. Land provisions and calculation of yield and composition were per SNI 19-3964-1994 for four types of vegetables: eggplant, cucumber, spinach, and kale. The total sampling points were 12 in 3 locations in Batang Kapas District. The results showed that the entire pre-harvest waste generation was 896.108 tons/year or 10,233 m3/year, during harvest was 898,384 tons/year or 8,876 m3/year, and postharvest was 9,548 tons/year or 69,423 m3/year. Total waste generation is 11,343 tons/year in weight units or 88,532 m3/year in volume units. Pre-harvest density was 0,097 kg/l, 0,095 kg/l during harvest, and 0,153 kg/l postharvest. The pre-harvest waste composition comprised 66,36% agricultural, 21,28% hazardous, and 12,36% dry waste. The design of waste during harvest and postharvest was 100% agricultural waste. The biodegradability result was 74,68%. The potential for recycling pre-harvest waste was 66,44% agricultural waste and 4,96% dry waste. The potential for waste recycling during harvest and postharvest was 100% agricultural waste. Based on this study, recommendations were reducing waste, segregation, and storing waste, reusing, composting using an open windrow composting system, processing it into fish pellets, and the hazardous waste given to used goods collectors. Keywords: Characteristics, composition, recycling potential, seasonal vegetable waste, waste generation.
