Abstract

This research was conducted from June until August 2015. This research used purposive sampling of plants that were both flowering and fruiting. Similarity analysis used the NTYS 2.02 program. Quantitative and qualitative variations in morphology were found in the plants obtained from 5 different nagari. Six different fruit shapes were observed (oblate, spheroid, highly spheroid, pyriform, elipsoid, and narrowly obovate). Extensive quantitative variations were found in trunk diameter, branching angle, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, fruit length, fruit weight and seed weight. Extensive qualitative variations were found in canopy shape, leaf shape, fruit shape, seed shape, fruit color and texture of the flesh. The texture of the avocado flesh (mesocarp) was either watery or buttery. Fruits with a watery texture were either oblate, spheroid, highly spheroid or narrowly obovate whereas fruits with buttery flesh were either pyriform or elipsoid. Similarity across 53 accessions was 21-96% based on both quantitative and qualitative parameters. Keyword : avocado plant, characterization, variations, morphology
