Abstract

This experiment was conducted from June to August 2016 at the Faculty of Agriculture Experimental Farm, Andalas University, Limau Manih, Padang, West Sumatra at an altitude of 356 m above sea level. This experiment used a randomized block design which consisted of 5 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments were mixtures (1:1:1 by volume) of various growth media as follous: rice husks:soil:chicken manure; rice straw:soil:chicken manure; sawdust:soil:chicken manure; compost from empty oil palm fruit bunches:soil:chicken manure and compost from municipul waste:soil:chicken manure. Data were analyzed using the F-test at the 5% significance level and significant differences were further tested using Duncan's New Multiple Range Test at the 5% level. Rice husks or rice straw mixed with soil and chicken manure gave the best effect on the growth of vanilla cuttings in terms of shoot length, the length of the longest leaf, leaf number, number of internode segments and the number of roots.
