Abstract

About 22.2% of Indonesian landform is formed by volcano activities (35 of them are Sumatera Volcanoes) with a lot of sources of pumice and volcanic ash. The objective of this study are to identify the morphological, mineralogical, and chemical properties of pumice and volcanic ash and to determine their optimum adsorption capacity on removing water pollutant materials, especially Fe3+, Al3+, and herbicide. This study was carried out in June 2014 untill March 2015. The beginning of this study was identification of properties of each samples, such as; (a) color (matching method using Munsell Soil Color Chart), (b) pH H2O and KCl (Seven Easy Mettler Toledo pH meter), (c) total of chemical properties (XRF), (d) CEC and bases (modified shaking method using ammonium acetate and water), and (e) Identification of mineral properties (XRD and SEM). Batch Adsorption Studies is methodology to determine the adsorption capacity of both materials. Pumice is white and pale yellow at neutral condition (pH 6.7), consist of quartz and feldspar minerals and carriying Ca, Mg, K, P, Fe and Cl. Every 1 mm2 of pumice is able to adsorb an amount of 7 mg Al, 5 mg Fe, and 2 mg Cl. Pumice is able to adsorb cloride (Cl-) almost twice than from initial content when direct contact and 3 times higher after placed in sachet. Pumice adsorbed sulphur 3 times higher after treatment. Volcanic ash samples are light gray to gray color with pH 2.9-5, contain feldspar mineral and no quartz as well as essential element Ca, Mg, K, P, Fe, Cl and sulphur (S). Volcanic ash is able to adsorb chloride 14 times higher after placed in sachet. Meanwhile, volcanic ash is not able to adsorb sulphur from herbicide solution.
