Abstract
Man belo is part of the culture and community life that have long been known and is one of the traditions that almost made in all regions in Indonesia, especially in the Batak Karo where women Batak Karo still do traditional man belo with ties grades invitation indigenous culture Karo, tradition belo man is a very important role in the life and customs of various ceremonies Karo; like the marriage ceremony. This study uses a qualitative method of data collection techniques of observation, interview and literature study. While the selection of informants by purposive sampling, by dividing the informants became key informants and informant usual. This study aims to look at each of the stages of man belo tradition and to find meaning in tradition belo man at the marriage ceremony Karo. Based on the research results, in Karo traditional marriage, there are stages that must be undertaken ahead of the marriage ceremony, the first stage of maba beloselambar, the second stage of nganting manuk, custom work, and banging. Who at all stages of the marriage ceremony always begins with using belo (betel) which is in Kampil (betel nut) which contains other materials lime, gambier, areca nut and tobacco. Tradition belo man in various stages of a wedding ceremony is interpreted as opening talks and making a proposal for approval to the girl with the benchmark approval bride's aunt. Belo along with the accessories used also as a tool for permission to bring the bride to the groom's family. Man belo also serve as a symbol of welcome and respect for guests arriving by presenting belo. After the marriage ceremony belo also be interpreted as modifying said rebu not be rebu (bersapaan can not directly). Said conversion is done from the groom to the parents of women from the bride, and the bride to the parents of the man of the groom. Researchers from the overall interpretation on the marriage ceremony has meaning as a symbol of openness to the guests come during the marriage ceremony.
