Abstract

Background : Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world, including in Indonesia. One type of cancer that is much experienced by cancer patients in Indonesia is nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). NPC is the treatment of choice for radiotherapy. Treatment of N PC is radiotherapy which has high effectiveness. According to some studies radiotherapy has the effect of lowering levels of hemoglobin. Low levels of hemoglobin oxygenation affects to cancer cells. Hyp oxic cancer cells more radio resistant, it’s can affec ts the prognosis of patients. This study aims to describe hemoglobin levels before and after radiotherapy in patients with nasopharyngeal cancer in RSUP DR. M. Djamil Padang 2014. The method used descriptive to 21 samples of nasopharyngeal cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy were held in Septem ber - October 2015 in medical record of r adiotherapy at RSUP. Dr . M. Djamil Padang. Subjects were nasopharyngeal cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy which meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria in this study. The results shows that most patients undergoing radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma are male (86.7%). Most patients who undergo ing radiother apy nasopharyngeal carcinoma is found in the age range 41 - 50 years. Hb levels prior to treatment of nasopharyn geal cancer patien ts undergoing radiotherapy find mostly in the l ower state ( 73.3% ) . Almost all Hb nasopharyngeal cancer patients after radiotherapy in a s tate with a lower ( 93.3% ) Conclusions : The mean Hb level of nasopharyngeal cancer patients before and after undergoing radiotherapy is in a low state.
