Abstract

Column is one of the most important elements in a structure, its usefulness makes column designer try to get an approriate and efficient design. Column with varying surface in geometry is oftenly used in engineering field because it can reduce weight of the structural design so that the cost can be reduced as well. One of the case that involves that condition is Taper and Stepper Column which are weighted by axial load. The design of this column structure is done by calculating the critical load using Numerical Approachment Equation. This Research is aimed to calculate critical strenght of Taper and Stepper Column by considering the critial load of the Column. The process is done by using Approachment Equation based on Finite Element Methode. After getting the numerical results, then a simple and practically escort is introduced in designing Structural Column caused by axial load. This practically secort includes information about the reduction factor value (Pcr/Py) that is suggested in many designing column taper condition. Within knowing the reduction factor, Critical strength of column structure can be predicted easily by only multiplying reduction factor value with the yield strength value of the Column material. Keywords: Critical strength, Taper Column, Stepper Column
