Abstract

Complementary feeding is food or drinks that contain nutrients given to infants or children aged 6-24 months to meet their nutritional needs. However, in the current reality, early provision of complementary feeding in the community is very high. Provision of complementary feeding before the age of six months can cause health problems, one of the effects is indigestion. This study aims to determine the factors associated with early provision of complementary feeding at the working area of Ulak Karang Health Center in 2015. This study was conducted in Ulak Karang Health Center on April-June 2015. This research is an analytical observational study with cross sectional design. The study population was mothers who had children aged 6-24 months who resided in Ulak Karang Health Center. The number of samples taken was 77 people through multi-stage random sampling. Data collecting was done through interviews using a questionnaire. Bivariate analysis was done with chi-square test The research showed that more than half of the respondents had low knowledge (53.2%), a positive attitude (64.9%), unaffordable health care (59.7%), inactive health care workers (54.5%), negative culture (55.8%), and early provision of complementary feeding (59.7%). There is a relationship between mother's knowledge, mother’s attitude, the role of the health care workers and culture with early provision of complementary feeding (p = 0.000). It is expected that the health care workers in the work area of Ulak Karang Health Center to be more active in conducting counseling, collecting data, monitoring the mothers and the family regarding the appropriate provision of complementary feeding.
