Abstract

Retirement is a stage where one leaves the workforce and begins to chase their passion which relatively can be described as something new or fresh (Bjorklund, 2009). Few are not ready or prepared to enter retirement, this is due to the fact that, retirement brings forth a lot of changes in one’s life. Which include changes in their role, values, and the changes in the life pattern of an individual. This research aims to observe the readiness or preparedness of the civil servants working at the office or agency of West Sumatra, reviewed through locus of control both internally and externally. The method of Quantative research is the method which will be utilized in this research, tested through a correlation analysis test. The subjects of this research are the 388 civil servants who work in the office or agency of West Sumatra. The data collecting process will go through the psychological research scale, which would measure retirement readiness, researchers will compile the data through the definition of readiness expressed by Merriam (in Walinga 2008), though the aspects of readiness by Yusuf (Fajri and Khairani 2011), and the locus of control scale a modification made by the researchers from the Levenson scale (Levenson 1973, Anwar, 2012) The results of the research shows that there was a low significant correlation between internal locus of control with retirement readiness, which equals to 0.210 and an external locus of control with the retirement readiness of -0.298, meaning that the higher the tendency of internal locus of control, the higher the readiness of civil servants to face retirement, compared to the higher tendency of external locus of control, the lower the readiness of civil servants in facing the coming of retirement.
