Abstract

This thesis is aimed at finding the swearwords used by the characters in the movie Boys Don€t Cry by Kimberly Pearce. The objective of this research are (1) to identify the subjects of swearwords, (2) to describe the reasons of using swearwords and(3) to find out the functions of swearwords used by the character in the movie Boys Don€t Cry. The data of this research are verbal utterances which containing swearwords uttered by the characters. In collecting the data, the observational method is used with note taking technique. In analyzing the data the referential method and distributional method are applied. The results of analysis are presented by using formal and informal methods. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that characters in the movie Boys Don€t Cry are shared similar term of subjects in swearing. There are seven subjects: (1) copulative terms/sex, (2) excretory term, (3) bodily function, (4) sexual irregularities, (5) animal term, (6) mother-in-law and (7) death. There are three reasons influencing the use of swearwords. They are: (1) psychological, (2) social and (3) linguistic reason. Swearwords have functions (1) to create attention, (2) discredit people, (3) provoke violent confrontation, (4) to create strong personal identification and (5) be catharsis. Copulative or sexual term is the highest rate subject of swearwords used by the characters in swearing around (54, 4%). Psychological is the major reason used by the characters to vent their inner feelings or emotions. Based on the function of swearwords, to discredit is the highest rate function of swearwords used by the characters around (27, 2%). There are two additional functions of swearwords were found by the researcher they are: to make a joke and as an expletive. Keywords: Verbal obscenity, Swearword
