Abstract

Birth weight is an indicator of baby’s health, it depends on fetal growth during pregnancy. This research aims to determine correlation between maternal weight gain and birth weight. This research is an analytic research with cross sectional design. The samples were 38 pregnant woman in Ambacang Kuranji who had given birth on 2014. Weight gain calculated based on the difference of maternal weight at more than 28 weeks of pregnancy and less than 10 weeks of pregnancy. Birthweight determined immediately after delivery or as soon thereafter as feasible. Samples selected by simple random sampling method. The research started from November 2014 and finish on March 2015. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation test. The results showed that most of mothers have normal BMI (65,8%) and gain 8-12 kg on their pregnancy (65,8%). Most babies have a normal birth weight (92,1%). There was a positive correlation between the maternal weight gain and fetal weight (r=+0,395) The conclusion of this research is there was a positive correlation between the maternal weight gain birth weights in Ambacang Kuranji. Most mothers have normal BMI, gain ideal amount of weight during their pregnancy, and most of babies have a normal birth weight. Key words: body mass index, maternal weight gain, birth weight
