Abstract

This research aims at: 1) describing the kinds of sound changes in PM and PBM contained in Minangkabau language of Bateh Tarok isolect; 2) describing the types of sound changes in PM and PBM contained in the Minangkabau language of Bateh Tarok isolect; 3) determine the form of phonological innovation and retention of PM and PBM occured in Minangkabau language of Bateh Tarok isolect. This is a descriptive research by using qualitative approach. This research was conducted in Jorong Bateh Tarok in West Pasaman Regency. The method used in collecting the data is conversation and observational method. The basic technique used is eliciteting and bugging technique, supported by interviewing, recording, and note taking techniques as advanced technique. The data are analyzed by using articulatory phonetic identity method. The determination of innovation and retention is used a top down approach. The results of analysis in this research are presented with formal and informal methods. The results of this research are: 1) found the kinds of the sound changes from PM and PBM in Bateh Tarok isolect, namely (1) lenition which includes apheresis, apocope, syncope, and haplology, (2) prothesis, (3) metathesis, (4) fusion, (5) vowel breaking, (6) diphthongization, and (7) monofthongization. 2) found the types of sound changes PM and PBM in Bateh Tarok isolect, which is linear inheritance, merger, and split. 3) the form of phonological innovations PM and PBM in Bateh Tarok isolect are, */ə/ > /o/, */a/ > /o/, */a/ > /e/, */ə/ > /a/, */i / > /ie/, */u/ > /uo/, */aw/ > /o/, */v/ > /e/, */t/, */k/, */p/ > /ɂ/, */h/, */r/, */ɂ/ > /ø/, */s/ > /h/, */k/ (on the specific words) > /g/, */ñ/ > /ø/, */b/ > /w/. In addition to phonological innovation and phoneme of PM and PBM also underwent retention at a particular position. The phonemes PM and PBM are experiencing retention on Bateh Tarok isolect are, */a/, */i/, */u/, */b/, */c/, */d/, */g/, */h/, */k/, */l/, */m/, */n/, */ñ/, */η/, */p/, */r/, */s/, */t/, */w/ and */y/.
