Abstract

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the world. Theories suggest that there is a pathogenic potential of Blastocystis sp as a risk factor in colorectal cancer. Blastocystis sp can cause an imbalance in humoral immunity with the elevation of igG dan cytokines that cause leukocyte levels to rise in Blastocystis sp infected patients. This study aimed to see the relationship between Blastocystis sp infection and leukocyte profiles in colorectal cancer patients. This study was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional approach. The total samples were 22 in Dr. M. Djamil Padang General Hospital. Univariate and bivariate analyses were used in this study. An Independent T-Test was used for data analysis. The test is significant if the p-value> 0,05. The study found that there were 22 colorectal cancer patients with a mean age number of 50,6 years old, were commonly male, and 27,3% were infected with Blastocystis sp. The mean leukocyte levels in Blastocystis sp infected colorectal cancer patients was 9841,6 and the non-infected Blastocystis sp was 9.792/mm3 with a p-value of 0,9. The mean leukocyte count of basophil /eosinophils/ neutrophils/ lymphocytes / monocytes in colorectal cancer patients with Blastocystis sp infection was 0/3/0/72/21/8 and without Blastocystis sp infection was 0/2/0/66/14/8 with a p-value >0.05. The study concluded that there was no relationship between the incidence of Blastocystis sp infected with blood leukocyte profiles in colorectal cancer patients.
